Health

happier, healthier, more productive living

According to Merriam-Webster, health means sound in mind, body, and spirit; in a flourishing condition.  To be healthier means to be moving towards health, to be on a path toward wholeness and vigor.

Practicing forgiveness contributes to making you a healthier person.  Several of the books in our Resource section describe and cite studies that show the positive effects of forgiveness on one’s health.  Here are a few summary statements.

People with forgiving personalities have fewer psychological problems, feel more satisfied with their lives and are generally healthier than grudge holders (Journal of Adult Development, 2001 and other studies).

Least forgiving people were more likely to suffer from depression, have trouble sleeping, or report some type of health problem (Louis Toussaint summarizing a number of studies).

Several studies link forgiveness with reduced cancer, heart disease, stress, and other illnesses.  Groups who were taught forgiveness skills had a significant decrease in levels of anxiety and depression, as well as improved self-esteem (Campaign for Forgiveness Research).

Practicing forgiveness reduces stress and calms your mind and nervous system.  It focuses your attention on the present moment and encourages you to be grateful
